Hardin-Simmons University, or HSU, for short, is a private Baptist university located in Abilene, which is a city in Taylor and Jones counties in west central Texas, USA, serving as the county seat of Taylor County, with more than 158 000 people, living within its limits, at the time of the 2006 census estimate.
The university was established in 1891, being founded by the Sweetwater Baptist Association and a group of cattlemen and pastors who sought to bring Christian higher education to the Southwest, being originally called Abilene Baptist College. It adopted its current name in 1934, in honor of its major contributers, Mary and John G. Hardin.
HSU offers its students `a wide range of undergraduate and graduate level programs, as well as additional special programs in academics, international studies, and leadership.`
HSU's athletic teams are known as the Cowboys and Cowgirls, and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are purple and gold.
Among HSU's noteworthy alumni, there are also: Willis Whitfield - inventor of the Cleanroom, Don Collier - western film and television actor, and C.V. Wood - entrepreneur who relocated London Bridge to Lake Havasu, Arizona.
